The Second Line World of Mardi Gras Parasols

m-8908

Before people embark on their 6-week sacrifice of Lent come Ash Wednesday, some areas hold a big party where they can indulge in their own desires. The French and those in New Orleans may call it Mardi Gras. Others like the Venetians call it Carnival. Anyway, while those in Venice often don masks and dress in lavish costumes for masquerade balls, those in New Orleans usually tend to hold costumed parades with jazz music and floats. While the costumes in Venice reflect that of a bygone era, the costumes in New Orleans are incredibly festive that they may include some flamboyant parasols among them. Some can contain flashy sequins. Some might have feathers. While some may consist of fringe. So for your reading pleasure, I give you an assortment of parasols for Mardi Gras. Enjoy.

The Hidden World of Mardi Gras Masks

Mardi-Gras-Decorations-001

Another big February holiday that’s coming up is Mardi Gras as Carnival season will soon be in full swing back in Europe. And one of the features in Carnival are these fancy masks. They may give you an impression of what you see in a masquerade ball with dazzling costumes as you might’ve seen in my post on the Venetian Carnival. This year, with Ash Wednesday falling on Valentine’s Day, it’s fair to say that Mardi Gras will fall on the day before. So I might as well get it out of the way if I can. Still, the masks can be as elaborate as the costumes themselves as you can see above. Some have gold. Some have feathers. Some have lovely embroidery. And some even have jewels. But each mask can be beautiful in its own way. So for your reading pleasure, I give you an assortment of unique Mardi Gras masks.

Dazzling Masquerade Costumes at the Carinval of Venice

groupe

Next week is Mardi Gras which marks an occasion of parties and parades before Christians the world over take part in their 6 week sacrifice over the course of Lent. And while most Americans think New Orleans whenever they hear about Mardi Gras, it’s actually celebrated the world over. One of the best known Mardi Gras celebrations is Carnival which can last at least a week prior to Fat Tuesday or longer. One of the most famous is the Carnival of Venice, best known for its elaborate masks and costumes. It was said that this festival in the city of singing gondolas and canals was first celebrated in 1162 for the victory of  a victory of the “Serenissima Repubblica” against the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrico di Treven with people gathering and dancing at San Marco Square. Venice would make their Carnival official during the Renaissance and would achieve great renown and notoriety. In the 17th century, the Carnival of Venice was a way to save the city’s prestigious image while it attracted notoriety in the 18th as encouraging license and pleasure and protecting Venetians from present and future anguish. Nevertheless, the King of Austria would outlaw the festival entirely in 1797 while the use of masks was strictly forbidden. But that didn’t stop the famous carnival from gradually reappearing in the 19th century, but only for short periods and above all for private feasts where it became an occasion for works of art. The Carnival would officially return in 1979 thanks to the Italian government making it a centerpiece wanting to bring back Venice’s history and culture. College students redeveloped some of the masks to sell to tourists. And since then, the Carnival of Venice attracts about 3 million visitors each year. They even have a mask beauty contest to boot that’s judged by international costume and fashion designers. At any rate, the Carnival of Venice is well known for its style of gorgeous costumes and masks. So for your reading pleasure, I give you a glimpse into the colorful world of the Venice Carnival.

  1. At the masquerade, it always pays to dress in blue.

Mardi Gras Mambo with These Mardi Gras Craft Projects

be4cd241752d999b9acd3e8dd64eb9c2

Another big holiday in February is Mardi Gras and that occasion tends to give rise to a lot of partying, especially in New Orleans. Because after that is Ash Wednesday which starts the Lenten season of pertinence for all you Christians out there, particularly my fellow Catholics who aren’t encouraged to eat meat on Fridays. Nevertheless, this  year, Mardi Gras falls on February 9, which is before Valentine’s Day and means that Easter will fall in March this year. Which means I can be free to do stuff pertaining to Star Trek and Harry Potter in April.  Still, I bet there are plenty people who celebrate Mardi Gras since it’s a holiday celebrated in a lot of Catholic countries in one variation or another. Yet, you also have Catholics like me who don’t celebrate the holiday as well as plenty of non-Catholics and non-Christians that do, such as in New Orleans. There it’s a tradition. Anyway, that doesn’t stop so many people from decorating their homes for the holiday or make their own costumes, which is why I’m doing this post. So for your reading pleasure, here are some crafts projects to make in preparation for Mardi Gras.

  1. A Mardi Gras wreath always have to be covered in beads.

This looks quite fancy with the peacock feathers and the purple and gold tulle around it. Nevertheless, it’s quite pretty.

5. You can’t go to a Mardi Gras party without topping it all off with some crazy feathered hat.

3c61860a125ab13c93796cad24766f70

Seems to resemble the kind of hats you probably see in a Dr. Seuss story. Then again, going crazy on Mardi Gras is to be expected.

6. You can’t have too many feathers on your Mardi Gras mask.

3cf52dccadbf29cf65aa6769b2fb665d

This mask seems to be made from silk petals, purple and yellow feathers, and gold glitter. Yet, seems easier to make than the other one.

7. Grace your door this Mardi Gras with a tulle wreath of green, purple, and yellow.

3fb36657391fc242f1530b69957c2115

Yes, this is another Mardi Gras tulle wreath. But this one has a sequin mask, a couple fleur de lis, and border of beads.

8. Of course, on Mardi Gras, you can’t forget the fleur de lis.

4e9175b9b28c0d74ddab9c882be08852

Yes, it’s a French symbol. But as an American, I’m going with the New Orleans tradition here. And people over there use it for Mardi Gras.

9. Nothing is more festive on Mardi Gras than a peacock feather wreath.

4ff37c8c045bc00b39270b28d2ce9423

I’m sure you can find peacock feathers like these at any craft store. Nevertheless, this wreath is certainly lovely if you ask me.

10. A Mardi Gras parasol makes a mighty fine centerpiece.

5a779b68148572a095487661ad3b2693

Not sure if this could fit in my dining room. Probably would yet it might make contact with the ceiling fan. Still, I love the dangling flowers. Very pretty.

11. A mask and feathers always look great on any Mardi Gras wreath.

5b04cb6c251568a87eb3f28caa6a16ed

Yes, I know I keep putting wreaths on there. But there’s a reason for that. This one has an elaborate mask as well as purple feathers sprouting on it.

12. Attend a Mardi Gras party in your very own Mardi Gras dress.

5c7822cafff30bd9a90bfd78fbd3325b

Seems like it’s mostly made from feathers glued to some dress. Nevertheless, I have to admire this woman’s creative spirit for it is rather colorful.

13. Seems like a lot of festive stuff can come out of one mere Mardi Gras hat.

5d24d74ce08158c8005ad7205e985231

I think this could either be a centerpiece or a wall hanging. I’m not sure which. Still, it’s a rather creative decoration if you ask me.

14. Shine at a Mari Gras party this year wearing this rosette mask.

5f1dd8eb98ec37e86c5878b84b186bc9

The rosettes are all made from tissue paper in this and making them takes some time. But it also has a purple feather for added effect.

15. Celebrate this Mardi Gras with your very own parasol mask centerpiece.

6d7fab9b7687bcc3d18d02fcdb723332

This looks rather pretty with feathers and see through fabric on it. Doesn’t hurt that it’s purple, too.

16. When making a Mardi Gras wreath, always put the jester mask in the center.

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m sure this jester mask might potentially frighten kids. However, for some strange reason, I actually think this is cool.

17. You can’t have a better Mardi Gras decoration in your home than a fleur de lis made of beads.

6f96f3304d2515cea6f8ad26bda59e65

This is of a fleur de lis made from Mardi Gras beads you can get from any store. Yet, I’m sure making this requires a lot of time and patience.

18. A Mardi Gras tulle wreath always has to have some bows and beads on it.

7b3f31e24d600399351437e06be183d7

Out of all the tulle wreaths I’ve shown so far, this seems like the most simple to make. Then again, I’m sure you might need wires for the beads to stand up like that.

19. You can’t go to a Mardi Gras party without a headband of a fleur de lis and feathers.

7ca5cd48a9d544db675a6236310a9335

This seems to be made from stuff you’d find at any craft store and it shows. Yet, I do like the sequin fleur de lis on this though.

20. Nothing brings in the spirit of Mardi Gras than a hanging of curled up jingle shoes.

7d2ed077e9c4870d23c04d2a45c42791

I guess these are supposed to be jester shoes. Doesn’t seem to have big jingles on them. In fact, you can barely see them. But this will do.

21. Dress festively this Mardi Gras with your very won feather mask.

33c65730cbb4db9c4767d4f7bee1bd1b

This seems to be part mask and part headdress. I mean it’s covered with green, yellow, purple, and black feathers. And it has a peacock feather on the top.

22. A vase of masks and feathers makes a great centerpiece for your Mardi Gras table.

34ae4db084051160c4313c38c3c9131c

The vase is gold as I can see. And this seems to consist of a couple masks ans a lot of feathers. I see a peacock one and possibly a peasant one.

23. There is never a Mardi Gras wreath that can have too many ribbons.

36e6756fb3e4b59a434aa4e1aa461f3d

And this one seems to have all kinds of ribbons you can think of. Also, has some berries, a fleur de lis, a crown, and those shredded things.

24. Since Mardi Gras comes early this year, wrapping yourself in this quilt wouldn’t hurt.

37f4002f6459b8cdecf8df17e3259957

38eb5195dc6d560441ecb7e51051018d

26. When it comes to Mardi Gras floats, just decorate a wagon.

85ba102b9bee497029b2b4cbf79bf424

Of course, only do this when your locale has its own Mardi Gras celebration like in New Orleans. Still, I’m sure this float makes this little girl feel like a princess.

120dd6517b71f576a2f33967c5db20f7

This one is quite ornate with ribbons, gold baubles, peacock feathers, and even a couple of peacocks. Still, not sure what peacocks have to do with Mardi Gras.

29. For little girls, this outfit is the perfect Mardi Gras getup.

0201e0abdec21355dab609e7435505ce

The ribbons and bows on this outfit should be a dead giveaway that this is a girlie outfit. But it’s nevertheless a very cute one if you ask me.

30. Be pretty as a peacock this Mardi Gras with this peacock mask of gold.

496f3b9de024e10fbccea976618cec7d

Love the peacock feathers on this one. However, I wouldn’t like going to a masquerade and having to hold my mask with a stick all the time. Kind of becomes a pain.

31. Don’t have a parasol for Mardi Gras? Make your own.

667bf0a8b9924f2159c4a635b913da70

Love this one. It’s a shiny purple with purple feathers. However, hope they don’t use it in the rain. It’s more for decoration.

32. Mardi Gras beads can bring color to anything.

767d240ca798e1e6ed3b3568de2b0730

I guess this is some decorative piece for some table or something. Still, if you buy the right stuff, it looks rather doable.

33. For a simple Mardi Gras wreath, just add glitter and beads.

0949d976fd14cbb769da7b353bcd0dd6

34. Grace your coffee table this year with some Mardi Gras candles.

1601f0d4bbb4e94ac5ce041d63bcb4e0

8175419863e95b4f51b26a5993c3acf9

2d1765a0dc69b6abd0a932b785d836be

54. You just can’t have a peacock wreath without a peacock.

c14b4236f61b16ac87228157ee246bf3

55. Show the neighbors where the party is with this Mardi Gras lamp post.

c6870e07cde3448f609b31ddd1a1fd93

And it actually lights up, how about it? Wait, that’s just cardboard. Still, you have to like the beads and the cardboard signs on this. Really sets the Mardi Gras mood.

cf52e5fcb3ad5238c3f896c0030e63a7

f32584770d7c916d4b8333e39cf5b113

b5802f28206a5f926a68120fd311e36f

8d369ee49b616d6590981fd070d08e47

Get in the Festive Fat Tuesday Spirit with These Mardi Gras Treats

mardi-gras-dessert-table

When most Americans think about Mardi Gras, they think New Orleans. Yet, little do they know that this tradition has a lot of roots on in Continental Europe and Roman Catholicism, which was transplanted from French settlers in their North American colonies as well as Portuguese and Spanish settlers in Latin America. Now Mardi Gras isn’t really a religious holiday yet, it was celebrated the last chance to eat, drink, and be merry before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the 7 week penitential season which includes  6 weeks of Lent, followed Holy Week before Easter. Nevertheless, like a lot of religious holidays like Christmas and Easter, it has become somewhat secularized as another excuse to party. Of course, while Mardi Gras literally translates into “Fat Tuesday” in French, it has other names depending on the area like Carnival or the Feast of Fools like in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The timing of the Mardi Gras celebrations can also vary but they usually culminate the day before Ash Wednesday. Of course, not everyone celebrates Mardi Gras like myself despite being Catholic but that’s because most of my ancestors came from Germany, Ireland, Sweden and the British Isles and that I live in Western Pennsylvania, though there is a celebration in Philadelphia. Yet, it’s a holiday where parades are held and people dress costumes with some adults having a little too much to drink or screw for that matter. Still, it’s a holiday that has a lot of associations with food. So for your viewing pleasure, here are some creative Mardi Gras treats for your artistic culinary indulgence. Being American, most of the fare will be New Orleans inspired of course.

1. Bring in the festive Mardi Gras spirit with these colorful cake pops.

Now these are certainly a colorful lot. And each one of them has a unique design. Of course, if professionally made, they'll be on discount starting from Ash Wednesday for those who haven't given up sweets for Lent.

2. Make your Mardi Gras special with this one of a kind King Cake cinnamon bread.

In some places, king cake is a dish pertaining to Epiphany which marks the end of the Christmas season. In New Orleans, it's a cuisine associated with Mardi Gras. Originally in France this was a dry French bread type dough with sugar on top and a been inside 300 years ago, it's now more or less a braided Danish cinnamon fried dough type with a small plastic doll underneath. Hundreds of these are consumed in New Orleans during the season and you'll see a lot of these.

3. For dessert, you can’t go wrong with these Mardi Gras jello shot squares.

Of course, a word of caution here. Despite these squares' bright color and fruitiness, these are most definitely not for kids. That is, if they contain alcohol which is very likely.

4. Serve your Mardi Gras guests this colorful pasta salad this Fat Tuesday season.

5. I do declare that no one should make Mardi Gras cupcakes without decorating them with beads.

Nevertheless, you should never serve these cupcakes to children under 3 years old for obvious reasons. Still, I also love the icing and the tiaras on some of them.

6. For your Mardi Gras appetizers, treat your guests to this specially made Mardi Gras trail mix.

Now this contains popcorn, Chex Mix, peppermints, small plastic baby dolls, and white chocolate covered pretzels with sugar all over them. Of course, don't ask me about the plastic baby. It's a New Orleans thing.

7. For those who don’t have any time to make gumbo, how about a Mardi Gras pizza instead?

Now this contains pepperoni, red onions, cheese, as well as green and yellow peppers which aren't as spice as I originally assumed in November. Nevertheless, this doesn't contain tomato sauce which is derived by a crop from South America.

8. For your Mardi Gras lunch, chomp on these colorful lunch meat sandwiches.

These can range with salami and bolongna but I'm not sure if they're from Oscar Meyer. They also have bread dyed purple and yellow without crusts as far as I can see.

9. For something more festive and healthy, you can try this Mardi Gras wrap and salad.

Of course, you can tell this is a Mardi Gras dish because the mask appears carved from some vegetable dyed purple as are some of the carrots. Nevertheless, very colorful.

10. Make your Mardi Gras party special with these specially made cupcakes.

Of course, you can tell that someone at a few of these if you see their lips with a very unnatural color like green or purple. Yet, each looks pretty in its own way.
