The High Strung World of Beadwork

Since the very advent of modern humans, people have strung beads for ornamentation mostly for jewelry and other personal adornments as well as wall hangings, embroidered decoration, and even sculpture. Yet, they’ve also been used for religious purposes, good luck charms, curative agents, and for trade. Since they’re usually made from a variety of durable materials from all shapes, sizes, designs, and colors, they often survive in the archaeological record. Almost every culture in the world has their own form of beadwork with Native American styles being among the most well-known. Though to be fair, Native American beadwork as we know it didn’t develop until the Europeans introduced glass beads. A lot of African and Pacific Island cultures are identified with using beadwork as well. Today modern beadwork is often seen as a creative hobby to create jewelry, purses, coasters, and dozens of other crafts which can range in varying levels of difficulty and specialization. Nevertheless, you’d find plenty of bead crafts on Pinterest which can be quite elaborate and beyond a normal beader’s expertise. So for your reading pleasure, I give you a treasure trove of all the things people have done with beads.

Whether to fasten your clothing or just to make you look sharp, buttons have been made from almost every possible material imaginable. In 1918, the US government made an extensive survey on the international button market listing buttons made of vegetable ivory, metal, glass, galalith, silk, linen, cotton-covered crochet, lead, snap fasteners, glass, enamel, rubber, buckhorn, wood, horn, bone, leather, paper, pressed cardboard, mother-of-pearl, celluloid, porcelain, composition, tin, zinc, xylonite, stone, cloth-covered wooden forms, and papier-mâché. And they’ve been on almost every article of clothing imaginable like shirts, dresses, pants, shoes, jackets, coats, skirts, and even bags, wallets, and purses if you can count the last two. Also, they’ve been around a very long time in history as buttons and button type fasteners have been found in the Indus Valley Civilization, Bronze Age China, and Ancient Rome. But the functional buttons we know today were invented in 13th century Germany. As we all know, buttons can fall off or get lost from time to time. Then there are people who have so many loose buttons that they’re not sure what to do with them. Nevertheless, you’ll find buttons used on Pinterest for almost every known craft project imaginable. Some buttons are used to create pictures. Some to decorate lamps and furniture. However the case, here I bring you an assortment of them for your own reading pleasure.

    Well, it’s a familial display like a stick figure family on one’s car. And this one has a bunch of boys.A buttoned garden should have all kinds of flowers.

Yes, it’s another button flower bouquet. But this one has much more flowers together in a vase. Love it.

The Spouting World of Water Fountains

Whether in a scenic garden, a street, or a public park, you’re bound to find fountains spouting jets of water into the air during the spring and summer months. Though you may often see them as fancy water jets for people to look at and throw pennies in, they originally used for providing water from springs, reservoirs, mountain rivers, and aqueducts to cities, towns, and villages before the days of indoor plumbing. And until the late 19th century, most fountains were operated by gravity and needed a source of water from higher ground. But many also used siphoning to make water spout, too. Though we often think fountains were invented in Ancient Rome along with the aqueduct, both technologies actually come from the Greeks. Ancient Greek fountains were mainly made from stone or marble with water flowing through bronze pipes and emerging from the mouth of a sculpted mask representing a lion’s head or an animal’s muzzle. The most famous fountain in Ancient Greece was the Enneacrounos in Athens’ Agora which had 9 large spouts. But even that isn’t as impressive as the fountains of ancient Rome that contained decorations of bronze or stone masks of animals or heroes. Medieval Islamic as well as European Renaissance and Baroque fountains are often held as artistic masterpieces. Nevertheless, since we now have indoor plumbing, most fountains are now seen as decoration. Well, save for the occasional drinking fountain. Now since they tend to be popular in gardens, you can find many of them sold at any home improvement or garden store. And they come in all different, shapes, sizes, and forms. So for your reading pleasure, I bring you a treasure trove of water fountains to delight in.

  1. You can always make water spout through pipes.

Sure this mostly consist of pipe from the gutter drain. But it certainly works.

2. Even a miniature garden can use its own fountain.

Not sure if a mini garden fountain is quite right. Yet, I can see why someone would want one.

3. A small indoor fountain can bring some watery joy.

Helps if it has a colorful seahorse, coral, and golden shells. Then again, I kind of consider fountains more of an outdoor thing.

4. Sometimes a hollow stone column, a basin, and a metal spout is all you need.

Well, it doesn’t look like much. But it certainly goes with the garden scenery.

5. A watering can makes a wonderful fountain spout.

Well, that’s pretty inventive. Doesn’t hurt to put plants in it either.

This is a more naturalistic fountain for gardens. And yes, you barely notice it except for the water spouting at the top.

7. Even a small ceramic fountain is no less impressive.

Yes, it’s a rather small structure. But its deep blue color will certainly make an impression.

This one is shaped in a wheel with holes in the pipes. So the water can trickle down exactly where it’s supposed to.

Yes, you’ll find quite a few DIY varieties on here like this one. Yet, this fountain has a certain kind of charm.

This one appears to be made of copper from what I can tell. And are those things shaped like leaves?

11. Though most fountains are made of stone and marble, a tree stump one is always close to nature.

This one is even made with tiers still containing the bark. Great for any rustic garden.

This one just consists of a stone bowl and a small jet. It’s not fancy but it will do.

13. With this fountain, you’ll find water flowing down all the steps.

This one is best suited for a wall as you can see. But it will surely go well with wooden fencing.

After all, who doesn’t go for colorful decorations now and then? Love the brilliant blue.

Here’s another mosaic fountain with blue tiling. Yet, this one also has lovely white edging and a stone basin tricking water down once it’s full.

16. A bowl and pitcher can be just as nice.

Even helps if both are intricately decorated. As long as you have the pitcher pouring into the bowl.

This one uses a large stone jar that’s against a stone wall. Perfect for a garden, though I wouldn’t drink the water in it.

Well, that’s pretty ingenious. Just put the jet in with a bunch of rocks and you’re done.

19. With a box fountain, you sometimes need to cut corners.

Because if you don’t, where could the water flow like this? Well, it can overflow but that would make a mess.

20. When you have a pump, expect water to flow from buckets.

This one uses 3 buckets and a faucet. Certainly an interesting fountain to see.

21. A long thick log of bamboo is great for making a water wall.

A water wall is a certain type of fountain that has water flowing from the top down like a waterfall. Pretty simple explanation, really.

22. Speaking of water walls, check this one out of a Japanese arch.

This one is made from wood in the Japanese arch style. But it still has water trickling down from it.

23. Sometimes a large stone water jar is all you need.

This fountain has a stone jar tipped to have water spilling over the rocks. Fairly simple concept to apply.

Hey, if the old Sousaphones don’t work, you might as well. Since you can surely have water flowing in them.

This might be from some French chateau. Yet, it certainly goes well with the landscape.

Guess this is supposed to be for a courtyard. Love the blue and purple tiles.

Not sure if the wheel turns. But I guarantee there’s water coming out of it.

Another fountain in the Southwest patio style. But this one is quite colorful to behold.

Yes, it’s a fountain with a small picturesque scene. But you can’t help but love it.

The Festive World of Pinatas

For honoring Cinco de Mayo this year (or Mexican Saint Patrick’s Day as I call it), I’ve decided that instead of doing a craft and treat post for observing the holiday, I decided to mark the occasion through a post on something we associate with Mexico. That’s right pinatas. Of course, in the US, pinatas are commonly used for children’s birthday parties which they wear a blindfold and try to whack it down with a large stick before everyone scrambles to get candy coming out of it. However, despite its common association with Mexico, the pinata’s origins aren’t just reserved for that country. In fact, the word “pinata” is a Spanish deviation of the Italian word, “pignatta” meaning “earthenware cooking pot.” Not to mention, the idea of breaking a container with treats had existed in Europe since the 14th century. And it’s very likely that Europeans got the idea for it from China where it was used to celebrate the Chinese New Year and depicted as either a cow or ox and filled with seeds. In Europe, it was associated with the Christian observance of Lent. The first Lenten Sunday was called “Pinata Sunday” with a celebration called Dance of the Pinata. The pinata mostly consisted of a clay pottery container decorated with ribbons, tinsel, and colored paper.  Though to be fair, Mesoamerica did have similar traditions such as honoring  Huitzilopochtli’s birthday in mid-December. So the pinata tradition wasn’t quite imported though the Spanish used pinatas for catechism purposes as well to co-opt the Huitzilopochtli ceremony. And the Mayan tradition before that involved something similar to what you see at kids’ birthday parties. Still, in 16th century Mexican Catholicism, the pot represented man’s struggle against temptation. The pot symbolized evil with whatever’s in it the seasonal fruit within. The blindfolded person with the stick represents faith. Anyway, today, you’ll find pinatas in all different shapes and sizes. And it Mexico, you’ll find it used not just for kids’ birthday parties, but also for Christmas, weddings, and other occasions. Nevertheless, for your reading pleasure, I give you a treasure trove of these Mexican containers of goodies.

And I see it has sprinkles and chocolate icing. Can’t wait to the get to the filling with candy.

Well, I’m sure this one doesn’t contain any fish. But you’d have to be a real angler to hit this one.

Here we see him in an upside down position before he’s about to be broken apart by a bunch of excited 5-year-olds. Made from paper mache.

6. A minion pinata can always make birthday parties fun.

Of course, regardless what people might think about minions, they might agree on this one. But not always for the same reason. Yes, I know there are some people who don’t like these guys.

7. A lobster pinata makes a rather classic party addition.

However, only rich people can afford to have a lobster pinata at their kids’ birthday parties. Though I do like its tuxedo.

8. A tiki pinata can bring paradise to anywhere.

Though this might be a remnant of Polynesian culture. Because those tiki figures depicted their gods.

9. Nobody could resist this Dalmatian pinata pup.

Great for any firehouse birthday party. Though a German Shepard can do just as nice but they’re more associated with police.

10. If you like Pirates of the Caribbean, then this pinata is for you.

This one even has flaming tissue paper torches. Yet, we have to understand that a pirate’s life wasn’t as cool as these movies show.

11. Wonder what’s in this mysterious box.

According to Super Mario Bros., it can be a spotted mushroom that makes you bigger, a blinking star that allows you to shoot fire balls, or gold coins. Still, this is a pretty simple pinata to make.

12. A disco ball pinata always makes things groovy.

Make sure to use very shiny paper on the outside. But it must be broken to the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever.

13. This lipstick pinata definitely leaves a mark.

Even has some kiss marks to emphasize. Hope it’s full of candy and not cosmetic samples.

14. A happy butterfly pinata always brings a smile.

This is so cute I’d hate to see it broken open by a bunch of kids. But that’s the crux of a pinata’s existence.

15. This Frida Kahlo pinata is an artistic masterpiece.

After all, I can’t do a pinata post without including one of her. Since she’s an especially iconic Mexican artist.

16. A teepee pinata should have a few floral touches.

Though let’s remember not all of the Native American tribes lived in these things. Yet, they’re often depicted as such.

17. A rocketship pinata can always reach for the stars.

Well, great for any space themed party. And it doesn’t seem hard to make either.

18. You can never go wrong with a sandal pinata.

But remember that the candy is mostly stored in the sole and heel. Love the purple straps though.

19. You can’t deny the chemistry on this pinata.

This one has a flask filled with a purple substance. Nevertheless, I’m sure there won’t be harmful chemicals in this.

Whether it is to support your head while sleeping or make the couch look good, pillows are a common feature in any home with a bed and living room furniture. Though the ones we see are normally comprised of fabric envelope containing soft stuffing, some cultures have pillows made from wood or stone. Of course, the latter is due to standards of comfort, affordability, material availability. For instance, old Chinese pillows could be made of bamboo, jade, porcelain, wood, ceramic, and bronze. And they mostly didn’t resemble the pillows we’re used to. Now pillows have been around since 7,000 BCE in ancient Mesopotamia. Yet, only the wealthy used pillows which also served as a status symbol. The richer someone was, the more they owned. Aside from providing comfort to the head, they were also used to keep insects out of people’s hair, mouth, nose, and ears while sleeping. In ancient Egypt, wooden and stone pillows were mainly used for the deceased. As for softer pillows, well, they could be stuffed with reeds, feathers, or straw. Today, you’re more likely to find fillers of cotton stuffing, foam, synthetic fibers, latex, or down. As you see above, pillows can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, especially the decorative variety. And that’s where I come in. Some of the ones you’ll see will have a decorative case. Others, a unique shape. So for your reading pleasure, I give you a glimpse into the diverse world of cushiony pillows.

Seems like sharks have become popular lately. Makes me wonder why. But I think this design is quite charming.

I guess it’s a copy of some famous painting. Nevertheless, seems to be a true masterpiece.

Includes angel fish, starfish, and a sea turtle. And they all come finely painted.

The middle pillow has golden sequins and is made for a true queen. Though the bottle pillows also look nice.

Yes, these definitely are without a doubt. They just have a rather unconventional design.

Even includes an evergreen tree. Nevertheless, each mountain pillow comes with 2 peaks to form a range.

I’m just kidding about that one. It’s actually a pillow with a book title making you scratch your head.

A Wreath for All Seasons

A lot of my craft posts have featured wreaths at one point or another whether they be for holidays, for fandoms, or other kind of decor like shells or jewelry. Whenever I go on Pinterest, I seem to find wreaths for almost every occasion you can think of. Whatever it is, chances are you’ll find a wreath for it. Nevertheless, I also find a lot of wreaths which don’t seem to fit in any set box. Some may be seasonal. Some might reflect an interest or profession. Some might denote an occasion like a wedding, birthday, or graduation. Some might take on a particular theme. And some might just exist to make the place look pretty. In any case, a lot of these wreaths can be just as memorable as the ones I usually put on posts. Nevertheless, wreaths have a long history and much symbolism associated with them since ancient times, especially around the Mediterranean. Though the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Etruscans usually used them as prizes or crowns. Yet, other ancient Europeans used them as decoration, too. Today, wreaths can denote so many holidays and occasions or possibly none at all. So for your reading pleasure, I give you a treasure trove of wreath for all seasons.

Well, it has a lot of small flower pots with seeds, tools, and a nest. Great for any green thumb.

2. A peacock wreath should always come with sparkling flowers.

I guess this for a rather festive occasion. Love the flowers and feathers. So pretty.

This one includes a birdhouse, watering cans, and a key. Not sure what season this is for though.

Well, it has a few pine cones and foliage on it. Not sure if it’s suited for fall. But seems like it.

And they’re even more quaint in crochet form. Still, the flowers are quite lovely.

This looks pretty easy. Only has some starfish, a wooden anchor, and rope.

Just remember these flowers come after the daffodils. And I’ve never really saw them in that color before.

The Burning World of Candles

Before Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb paved the way for electric lighting on the mass market, people used candles to light their homes at night. As anyone knows about candles, they don’t light the room nearly as well as sunlight and other light sources. And that they must be handled with caution since open flames are a major fire hazard. Yet, you probably didn’t know that candles were also used for heat and to tell time. Nor were they always made from paraffin wax like nowadays. For there were candles made from tallow (beef or mutton fat which gave off a foul odor when burned), beeswax (which was more expensive than tallow), spermaceti oil (it’s from a sperm whale’s head that’s considered very valuable according to an abridged version of Moby Dick I read), and colza oil (which is an expensive lubricant for machinery derived from a plant). Nevertheless, thanks to electricity, candles are either used as a novelty for a romantic dinner, ceremonies and special occasions (especially in religion), or as light sources during a power outage. Oh, and many people bestow candles as gifts when they couldn’t think of anything better to buy (like in the SNL Christmas Candle sketch). You’d even have scented candles. Of course, while most candles usually consist of a long wax column with a wick, the ones I show don’t fit the mold. So for your reading pleasure, I give you a treasure trove of interesting candles you might not want to burn (or would).

Though I highly doubt it. But I suppose these only have a short wick to them.

I admit, gnomes may be tacky. But they have a certain charm to them. Besides, these come in all shapes and sizes.

Come in key lime, cherry, and chocolate apparently. And all are laced with whip cream.

Sure it looks tasty. But it probably comes in a waxy flavor. So don’t eat it.

Not sure if lighting one on top of a wine bottle is a good idea. But it’s a rather clever design.

There’s really something strange about this. Also, cigarette lighters aren’t a tasteful sight.

By the way, these are gel candles. Just so you know. And yes, I think the shells are real in them.

The Floral World of Flower Arrangements

As we all know, spring is always a time of flowers. Even though the flowers may not be out at this point since it’s late March. Nevertheless, as you see from my Easter posts, flowers always signal spring since it’s a time when everything becomes green again. Yet, while flowers are symbols of spring, they’re used for all kinds of occasions. A man may give flowers to his sweetheart on a date to express his love. A person may give flowers to any other woman in their lives or an actor for a great performance. You might see flowers in a bridal bouquet and at a wedding. Or you might find flowers at a funeral. Sometimes you might see flowers as mere decoration which don’t have anything to do with a celebration at all. Think of garden flowers in a vase on a table. Yet, no matter what the occasion may be, you’re bound to see flowers arranged in a variety of different ways and bouquets. Some may just be a vase of flowers while some could be in the realm of art. So for your reading pleasure, I give you a treasure trove of floral arrangements to bring in the spring.

  1. For gifts, may I suggest a puppy in a basket?

There’s a company that does flower puppies according to Pinterest. But I have to admit, it’s better than giving the real thing.

The Pastel World of Easter Village Houses

You may have noticed that my Easter posts so far have mostly been later editions of ones I’ve written in years past. Nevertheless, I also like to do Easter posts of items that I haven’t tried before. Village houses would be among them because I already did 2 of Christmas and one of Halloween. Yet, though Easter isn’t nearly as popular as either, it’s up there even if John Oliver calls it, “shitty Christmas” which may be borderline offensive but nonetheless accurate as far as commercialism is concerned. Though as far as my blog is concerned, I have little complaint since it gives me plenty of material. Anyway, the notion of Easter village houses is part of a phenomenon, I like to call Christmasfication, a word that might be my own invention. Now Christmasfication is what happens when one holiday’s tradition becomes part of another’s. Easter has been very much a product of this since it’s a religious holiday subject to a lot of commercialization since there are gifts involved bestowed by a mythical gift giver. However, it’s not to the extend Christmas is and has a greater focus on candy. Nevertheless, Christmasifcation doesn’t always have to involve integrating Christmas traditions, but it often does. Yet, with village houses, it kind of makes sense even on Easter. After all, pastel colors and cute critters are perfect for any spring towns. So for your reading pleasure I give you a treasure trove of pastel and springy Easter village houses.

  1. A spring house brings joyous Easter greetings.

This one has some imagery from vintage cards and silk flowers. Gives one a spring time feel.

2. A pastel house can use a white picket fence.

Doesn’t hurt it has a glittery base as well as a tree with Easter eggs. Like the flowers on the roof.

3. Cottontails Candy is always the place for sweets.

Not a big fan of light green and yellow together. But at least the name is clever.

I often use putz houses because they look less manufactured. This is no exception. Like the bunny.

After all, pastel houses look great on a mantle meant to extenuate spring. Love the flowers.

Like I said, churches usually don’t bask in the Easter decorations until after Good Friday. But they do in these village sets in order to set an Easter feel.

You can also put an Easter egg in the doorway. Though I wouldn’t advise a green and yellow one.

12. A house of lavender is particularly springy for chicks.

This one seems all dolled up for Easter. Like the wreath at the top window.

Adding a flower to its ear and a yellow bow helps a lot. So cute.

Now this one really gets into spring with its roof lined with pearls. Lovely.

Though I kind of wish it was a little fancier like an Easter egg. Though it certainly fits with the holiday.

This one just has trees with Easter eggs on them and little else. Well, it does have some pink window trim.

After all, Easter is a huge holiday for candy. So such a house is quite fitting.

Reason why we have orange as an Easter color at all has to do with carrots. Though I think it’s a loud color to put on an Easter house.

Now it’s on to the Easter craft projects. Last year I did a post like this which received a wonderful reception so I decided to do another. Nevertheless, people love to decorate their homes on Easter with springy adornments like flowers and birds. But you’ll also find a lot of colored eggs, chicks, ducks, sheep, and bunnies. In some religious homes, you might see crosses since it denotes Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection and perhaps a lamb to denote him Lamb of God. Anyway, above you’ll see a spring flower egg shaped wreath with a birdhouse along with two urns filled with matching flowers and colored eggs made from paper. So you get the idea. Yet, while you might see plenty of Easter crafts made by children at school, those made by adults can be used year after year. So for your reading pleasure, I give you another treasure trove of Easter craft projects.
