The Secret and Scandalous Lives of Disney Voice Actors – Volume VI: Part 53 Raya and the Last Dragon

Inspired by traditional Southeast Asian cultures the production team for Raya and the Last Dragon consulted experts from Southeast Asia Story Trust to ensure an accurate cultural representation in the film and they emphasized the importance of avoiding Asian stereotypes. For background research, the production team traveled to Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. In these places, they were inspired by the local sense of acceptance, unity, and trust, which they adopted as themes for the film. They also explored ways to express Kumandra’s characteristics with the filmmakers designating its 5 fractured lands with unique climates and characteristics to reflect the people’s diverse beliefs and culture. While each land and its people representing a mandala icon revolving around Kumandra. This is inspired by religious teaching that everything centered around a common belief system or cosmology. Kumandra’s Dragon River was inspired by the Mekong. Raya was originally conceived as a serious swordswoman focusing on finding Sisu. While Sisu was conceived as a dragon trapped in her human form who refused to help Raya. As writing progressed, Raya softened and Sisu became more helpful. With the writers approaching Raya as a character acting flawlessly and Sisu doing everything sideways. Raya’s observed quality would be culturally authentic, functional in her role as a swordswoman, and reflective of her emotional journey. Her costume’s based on a traditional sabai top and dhoti pants with cultural dragon references, and her high-collar cape and large hat initially act as protective layers the team intended to remove as she emotionally evolves in the film. Sisu and the other dragons are based on the naga, mythical beings that can manifest as serpents or humans and are associated with water. The team explored many of Sisu’s silhouettes and attitudes ranging from ethereal and magical to ferocious and skeptical. Specific elements in Sisu’s dragon form were retained in her human form in her human attire to create a cohesive, recognizable character design. Since the Covid 19 pandemic was still raging upon its 2021 release, Raya and the Last Dragon came out in theaters and Disney+ at around the same time. But due to the pandemic, I won’t give you the box office numbers since they’re not relevant. But it did become the 3rd most streamed film in 2021 and received critical acclaim. In this post, you’ll meet the voices behind 2 more Soul characters as well as Raya, Boun, Naamari, Young Naamari, Chief Benja, Tong, Dang Hu, and General Atitaya.

I am the first woman of color to have a leading role in a Star Wars movie. I am the first Asian woman to appear on the cover of Vanity Fair. My real name is Loan. And I am just getting started.” She later recalled that writing the essay was difficult, but also “probably one of the proudest moments of [her] career thus far.”
