While most Pixar franchises may have a sequel like Toy Story, Cars, Finding Nemo, and Inside Out, this ultimately wouldn’t be the case with Monsters, Inc. until the series Monsters at Work. Although that almost did happen with one proposed sequel focusing on Mike and Sulley visiting the human world to give Boo a birthday present only to find out that she moved. Eventually splitting up after disagreeing on what to do. But this was dropped once Disney bought Pixar while a prequel would be in the works instead. This one would revolve around Mike and Sulley’s first meeting in college, which contradicted a like where Mike tells Sulley, “You’ve been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade.” But Dan Scanlon justified a college meeting because “we wanted to see their relationship develop when they were adults. And we also felt like college is so much about self-discovery and figuring out who you are.” He added, “It felt like the perfect place to do this, but we had that line. So we tried versions where they met young and then we skipped ahead to college. And we knew we didn’t want to make Monsters Elementary.” Monsters University would be the first Pixar film using golden illumination, a new lighting system introduced as part of the rendering system overhaul since Toy Story. Filmmakers also visited several US colleges including Harvard, Stanford, Cornell, and MIT where they observed college architecture, student life, Greek organizations, and faculty teaching methods. Many of the film’s producers spent several weeks at a frat house and attended a “Bonfire Rally” at Berkeley in anticipation for the Big Game, a rivalry between the university and Stanford. Upon its 2013 release, Monsters University grossed $743 million at the worldwide box office against a $200 million budget as well as received positive reviews. In this post, we’ll meet voice actors Martin Jarvis, Maurice LaMarche, Robert Craig Smith, Kyle Hebert, and Reuben Langdon, filmmaker Josie Trinidad, as well as the voices behind Don Carlton, Professor Knight, Brock Pearson, and Johnny J. Worthington III.

Dates: 1958-present

Early Life and Career: Born in Toronto, Ontario in Canada. Family moved to Timmins shortly after his birth before moving back to Toronto when he was 4. Said his childhood was filled with his “own little world of cartoons and sixties television.” During his second year in high school, LaMarche learned of the popularity of his talent for mimicry could do for him. This realization came from a coincidental performance in a high school “variety night” when a couple of friends urged him to enter. The act he performed that night was “celebrities as waiters” which he used until the end of his stand-up career. At 19, he took his high school act to an open mic night in New York City performing to a reaction that he describes, “they just totally ignored me.” He then returned to Canada where he continued his stand-up career and started doing voice work. 3 years later, he moved to Los Angeles. His career progressed as he performed in clubs across the US, appeared several times on The Merv Griffin Show, and was part of a 1985 HBO Special that included Bob Saget, Rita Rudner, Louie Anderson, Yakov Smirnoff, and Sam Kinison. Even opened acts for Rodney Dangerfield, George Carlin, Howie Mandel, David Sanborn, and Donna Summer. However, his father was murdered by a lifelong friend in a Toronto lobby in 1987, in front of dozens of witnesses. This sent him into depression and alcoholism for the next 2 years, which effectively stalled his stand-up career. Got sober in 1989. In 1990, his 18-year-old sister was killed in a car accident, causing him to leave stand-up comedy for good. He would do voice acting from then on.

Trinidad nonetheless stated: “What I did was I worked really hard and I made sure that I tried. At least I could say I tried to make it into animation. If it worked, great. If it didn’t work, then maybe I was meant to do something else. But I never gave up.” Graduated from Adolfo Camarillo High School.
