Greenlit in 2009, Inside Out takes inspiration after Pete Docter noticed his daughter Elie becoming “more quiet and reserved” and began wondering what was happening internally. Docter and co-director Ronnie del Carmen also sought inspiration from their own personal histories and experiences. They later conferred with psychologists and specialists for accuracy. While designing Riley’s mental landscape, they consulted neuroscientists and took cues from DNA strands and photos of neuronal flashes. About 27 emotions were considered for early versions but the number was later reduced to 5 for simplicity’s sake. Originally Fear was supposed to accompany Joy on her journey. But that was later changed to the underrated emotion of Sadness. To promote more diversity, half the story team comprised of women when the animation industry as a whole largely consisted of men. Since research found that 11-17 year-old girls were more attuned to expressions and emotions than younger girls, Docter decided that Riley would be the setting. While the lead emotion would be female. Riley’s mind world incorporates soft surfaces, increased use of saturated colors and contrasty light, and translucency while the real world uses opposite attributes. The worlds’ designs resemble those in Pixar’s Up and Toy Story 3, the romantic drama One from the Heart, David Hockney’s theatrical productions, and the intended 1950s Broadway musicals. Upon its 2015 release, Inside Out received critical acclaim, $858.8 million at the box office, and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Based on the idea of exploring what dinosaurs represent in the present day and how they’re represented in stereotyped, The Good Dinosaur was an infamously troubled production. Multiple problems led to various story revisions as well as changing the director and voice cast. To create a realistic background for the film, the team traveled to various American landscapes, which the movie later incorporated. These include Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Juntura, Oregon, and southern Montana. To use the landscapes that they had experienced, the filmmakers used data from the US Geological Survey and satellite images from Google Earth. Arlo was designed to look distinct and relatable. While he and his family were relegated as farmers and carnivores like T Rexes become ranchers. In addition, The Good Dinosaur pays homage to the western genre in its themes, character representation, and western North American landscapes. Upon its 2015 release, the film received positive reviews but made $332.2 million against a $175-$200 million budget, which made it Pixar’s first box office failure. In this post, we’ll meet filmmaker Ronnie del Carmen as well as the voices behind Riley’s Dad, Forgetter Paula, Dream Director, Mind Cop Frank, Poppa Henry, Buck, and a few characters from Zootopia.

444. Dave Goelz
Dates: 1946-present

Early Life and Career: Born David Charles Goelz in Los Angeles. Had a childhood interest in puppetry, fascinated by children’s puppet shows such as Howdy Doody and Time for Beany. After graduating from John Burroughs High School in Burbank, he attended the Los Angeles Art Center College of Design, beginning his career as an industrial designer. Applied to work at Walt Disney Imagineering but was turned down on basis that they already had sufficient industrial designers already employed. Went on to work for companies such as John Deere, American Airlines, and Hewlett-Packard. During this time, he regularly watched Sesame Street fascinated with the design process behind the Muppet characters, costumes, and performances, leading him to wonder about the creators behind them. In 1972, Goelz attended a workshop conducted by Frank Oz at the Puppeteers of America National Convention in Oakland, California. One month later, following an invitation from Oz, Goelz attended daily tapings of Sesame Street during a work trip to Pennsylvania. He also brought 3 puppets that he recently built. Impressed by his work, Muppet workshop former head Bonnie Erickson recommended that Goelz meet Jim Henson. Months later, Goelz was able to present his design portfolio to Henson and ultimately received a job offer with Henson Associates as a part-time puppet builder. With his first assignment being to build puppets and design effects for a Broadway stage play but that project was abandoned in order to produce an ABC pilot, The Muppet Valentine Show. Upon returning to California, Goelz discovered that his electronics employer had replaced him. He then set up his own shop, creating puppets, and producing videos for industrial clients. 8 months later, Henson offered Goelz a full-time position as a designer and puppet builder, and occasion performer in specials, while allowing him to retain his main industrial clients. Returning to New York City, Goelz began working on The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence where he built the puppets for Nigel, Animal, Floyd Pepper, and Zoot, the latter which would be his first major character. In 1976, he traveled to London to begin work on The Muppet Show where he was promoted as a principal Muppet performer with the starring role of The Great Gonzo.

Characters: Subconscious Guard Frank and Mind Cop Frank
Also Known For: Puppeteer and actor known for his work with the Muppets. Best known for performing the characters Gonzo the Great, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Zoot, and Beauregard. Joined Jim Henson’s team in 1973 and has been involved in many Muppet productions including The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock, and various movies and TV specials. If it was made after 1973 and Henson’s name is on it, Goelz is probably involved. But he gets much less recognition for his work than fellow Muppet collaborator Frank Oz. Guess Oz voicing Yoda might have something to do with it.
Personal Life: Married to writer and former CFO of Jim Henson Productions Debra Freeman. They have 2 children. Over the years, he’s sustained a number of injuries due to the physical positions Muppet performers must maintain for extended periods of time and contort into small spaces. These injuries have resulted in 4 shoulder surgeries and a hip replacement.
Later Life: Still actively working as of 2025.
Trivia: None.
